From his earliest memories, Alvin Barnes of Jackson, Mississippi, has been captivated by the world of politics. Even as a young boy, politics seemed to course through his veins. He would transform his family home into the West Wing, assigning roles to his imaginary staff and riding with pride in his aunt’s GMC Yukon, pretending it was the presidential motorcade. Every trip out of town became a presidential mission aboard his version of Air Force One.
As Alvin grew older, his childhood fascination deepened into a serious commitment to political engagement and advocacy. In high school, he sharpened his skills through Forensics, mastering the art of debate and learning the power of standing up for what he believed in. His involvement with Mississippi Youth and Government allowed him to serve in the Youth House of Representatives, where he encountered a diversity of political thought that helped refine his emerging political philosophy.
In 2017, during his senior year of high school, Alvin faced the crossroads of determining his future. Encouraged by his mother to pursue his passion, he reached out to the Young Democrats of Mississippi only to find that no chapter existed in Hinds County, home to the state capital. Undeterred, Alvin connected with state leadership and set about founding the Hinds County chapter. In March 2017, he proudly became the first vice president of the newly chartered organization, navigating the triumphs and trials that leadership demanded.
Alvin’s passion for public service soon led him to Organizing for Action (OFA), President Barack Obama’s political action group. There, he spearheaded efforts to rebuild an OFA chapter in Mississippi, becoming the youngest organizing manager and state leader. His work with OFA focused on critical issues like DACA, the Affordable Care Act, and the campaign to change the Mississippi state flag, igniting a new level of purpose within him.
In December 2018, his dedication earned him a call from the Young Democrats of Mississippi offering him the role of Field Director. In this role, Alvin conducted a statewide chapter audit, further sharpening his leadership skills. Although he faced criticisms along the way, Alvin embraced them, viewing every setback as an opportunity to learn, grow, and strengthen his commitment to service.
Alvin’s college years at Tougaloo College (2017–2019) were marked by remarkable activism and community engagement. Elected president of the NAACP Tougaloo College Chapter in January 2018, he led initiatives that dramatically increased voter registration and turnout through the Tougaloo Votes campaign. His leadership saw the chapter win the prestigious Juanita Jackson Most Active Chapter award and launch the inaugural Derrick Johnson Freedom Fund Awards Gala, the chapter’s most successful fundraiser to date.
One of Alvin’s proudest moments came in leading the March for Our Lives rally in Jackson, Mississippi, following the tragic Parkland school shooting. Alongside partners like Moms Demand Action, he helped organize one of the most significant youth-led marches in the city, drawing over 300 participants. It was a day that reaffirmed his calling to stand for justice and inspire change.
