Alvin Barnes of Jackson Mississippi, The Lord Is My Light: Choosing Courage When Fear Shows Up

Some days, fear does not knock. It walks right in.
It can show up as anxiety about money, pressure from work, stress about family, or that quiet heaviness you cannot fully explain. Fear has a way of turning small problems into loud threats. It makes you overthink, second guess your decisions, and imagine worst case outcomes that have not even happened.
That is why this verse hits so hard:
“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”Psalm 27:1
Light changes what fear tries to hide
Fear grows in darkness. Not just physical darkness, but mental darkness, emotional darkness, spiritual darkness.
When God is your light, you see clearly again.
You start to recognize what is real and what is just panic talking. You remember that you are not powerless. You remember that you are not alone. You remember that God has carried you before, and He can carry you again.
Light does not always remove the challenge. It removes the confusion. It removes the lie that you are trapped. It reminds you where the exit is.
Salvation means you are not your own rescue plan
A lot of stress comes from feeling like everything depends on you. Your performance. Your timing. Your control. Your ability to hold it all together.
But the verse says, “The Lord is my salvation.”
That means God is not just giving advice from the sidelines. He is the one who delivers. He is the one who intervenes. He is the one who saves.
Your job is faithfulness. God’s job is outcome.
Stronghold means you can stand, even when life shakes
A stronghold is protection. A secure place. A defense that holds when the pressure hits.
So when the verse says, “The Lord is the stronghold of my life,” it is not saying you will never face trouble. It is saying trouble does not get the final word.
You might feel the wind, but you do not have to be moved by it.
A simple way to live this verse today
If you want to practice Psalm 27:1 instead of just reading it, try this:
Name the fear out loud. Be specific.
Replace it with truth. Say the verse slowly, like a declaration.
Take one obedient step. One phone call. One application. One apology. One budget decision. One prayer.
Release control. Remind yourself, God is my salvation. I do my part and trust Him with the rest.
A short prayer
Lord, be my light when my mind is cloudy. Be my salvation when I feel overwhelmed. Be my stronghold when fear tries to take over my day. I choose trust over panic. I choose courage over avoidance. I choose faith over fear. In Jesus’ name, amen.
