Why Knowing Our History is the Key to Shaping the Future

By Alvin Barnes of Jackson, Mississippi

Have you ever stopped to think about how much the past influences your everyday decisions? Over a decade ago, I wrote about the crucial benefits of knowing our history. Today, as the world moves faster than ever, taking a moment to look backward is not just an academic exercise, it is essential for our survival and growth. Here is why understanding history remains one of the most powerful tools we have for navigating the present and shaping the future.

1. History Forges Our True Identity

At its core, an identity is the essential character that identifies who we are. Without history, we are essentially walking into the future blindfolded. History gives us our identity by connecting us to our cultural roots and helping us understand exactly who we are. When we know where we come from, we gain a foundational context that allows us to better understand ourselves, the people around us, and the events that shaped our society. We learn about other people and their cultures through the stories and ancient manuscripts passed down through generations.

2. We Learn from the Mistakes, and Successes, of Our Ancestors

History is the ultimate playbook of human behavior. It improves our decision-making and judgment calls because it teaches us how to learn from the missteps of those who came before us.

  • Preventing Repeated Failures: By studying the mistakes of our ancestors, we equip ourselves with the knowledge to ensure we never make them again.

  • Understanding Systemic Hardships: A prime example of this is the history of slavery; by examining the devastating mistakes that led African Americans into slavery, we gain a stark reminder of why we must keep history from repeating itself.

  • Building on Triumphs: It isn't just about the negative, though. Being familiar with the past allows us to learn from profound historical successes as well.

3. Using Context to Understand and Drive Change

We live in an era of constant change. Fortunately, history provides us with a framework to understand that change. More importantly, it gives us the blueprint to change our own future. When we listen to the messages left for us by past events, we are empowered to shape new events. If we are willing to step up and mold the future, we literally have the power to change history.

The Bottom Line: Rewrite the Future

Ultimately, we always have the opportunity to rewrite history. The power doesn't just lie in memorizing dates or names, it is all about what you choose to do with the knowledge you have and understanding why you know it.

When Alvin Barnes of Jackson, Mississippi first explored these concepts in 2013, the goal was simple: to remind students that history is a living, breathing guide. Today, that message is for everyone. Dive into your history, learn its lessons, and use it to build a better tomorrow.
