Strengthening the Body of Christ

We are all part of the one Body of Christ. Each of us has a role, and each of us has a responsibility. The Church is not strengthened by words alone. It is strengthened when believers serve, pray, give, welcome, encourage, and help bring new people into the life of God.

As I reflect on this, I have to ask myself the same questions I would ask anyone else. What am I doing to strengthen the Body of Christ? Am I doing what I am called to do? Am I producing fruit for the body, or am I letting fear, comfort, pride, distraction, or doubt get in the way?

Those questions are not meant to condemn me. They are meant to awaken me.

It is easy to look at the Church, the parish, or the community and ask what needs to change. But the deeper question is personal. How can I strengthen the body of my parish? How can I support the people around me? How can I help create a community where people feel welcomed, seen, and invited into a deeper life with God?

Sometimes strengthening the Body of Christ means doing the visible work. It may mean serving in a ministry, helping with outreach, inviting someone to Mass, volunteering, or using my gifts to support the parish mission.

Other times, it means doing the quiet work. Praying for others. Speaking with patience. Encouraging someone who feels forgotten. Choosing unity when division would be easier. Showing up when no one is watching.

I also have to ask myself a harder question. What am I doing that may be hindering the community's growth,? Am I withholding my gifts? Am I waiting for someone else to do what God has already placed on my heart? Am I criticizing more than I am contributing?

The Body of Christ grows stronger when every member takes their place. Not everyone has the same role, but every role matters. Some teach. Some serve. Some comfort. Some lead. Some give quietly. Some invite. Some pray with great faith. Together, those acts become the living witness of Christ in the world.

If I want the parish to be stronger, I must be willing to strengthen it. If I want the Body of Christ to bear fruit, I must ask God to make my life fruitful first.

So today, my prayer is simple. Lord, show me my place in Your body. Help me use my gifts with humility. Remove what gets in the way. Teach me to serve with love, to build with patience, and to strengthen Your Church by the way I live.
