A Seed That Dies to Bear Fruit

By Alvin Barnes of Jackson, Mississippi

What good is a seed that does not produce fruit? And what good is a seed if it never dies so that fruit can come forth? That thought makes me reflect on the Christian life more deeply. Christ had to die so salvation could come. His sacrifice became the source of life for all who believe.

When I think about that, I also have to look at my own life. If I spend my life trying only to preserve my comfort, my plans, my desires, and my will, then I may be holding on to things God is asking me to release. The seed cannot remain the same and still become fruitful. Something has to surrender. Something has to be buried. Something has to be transformed.

Jesus teaches that whoever wants to save his life in this world will lose it, but whoever gives up his life for God will gain eternal life. That is not just a verse to read. It is a truth to live. It means my desires cannot take precedence over God’s will. My plans cannot become my idol. My comfort cannot become my master.

When I choose my own will over God’s will, I am living only for this world. I am chasing what is temporary while risking what is eternal. But when I give my desires, my ambitions, my fears, and my future back to God, I am learning what it means to live truly.

A seed does not die because it has no value. A seed dies because something greater is hidden inside it. In the same way, surrender is not the end of me. It is the beginning of what God wants to produce through me.

This year, I want to stop clinging to what God is asking me to release. I want to trust that what feels like loss may actually be preparation. I want my life to bear fruit that honors God, serves people, and points beyond this world.

May I have the faith to die to selfishness, pride, fear, and control. May I have the courage to give God my will. And may my life become good soil for whatever fruit He desires to grow.

With faith,

Alvin
